HDD and Tape Will Continue to Provide Critical Mass Storage Well into the Future Despite the Growth of Flash

While NAND flash continues to capture most of the data storage headlines and has been proclaimed numerous times as the near-term replacement for HDDs, both HDD and tape storage will occupy an important and long-lasting role in mass storage well into the future. Consolidation of use cases down to targeting high-capacity, ultra-low-cost storage have enabled a mature HDD and tape supply chain to focus operations, stabilizing financial performance in order to further the value proposition of these legacy storage technologies.

This presentation will note the remarkable recovery of the HDD industry following the market-wide storage collapse of 2022 and 2023 and highlight both the near-term and long-term opportunities and challenges facing the HDD industry over the next several years. An overview of the smaller, but still important, tape market will also illustrate the important role that tape continues to play, especially in critical growth markets such as hyperscale/cloud storage.

Updated Storage (HDD and SSD) Market Outlook

昨年のHDD市場を振り返ると、年前半のNLドライブ市場は年前半から台数ベースで勢いよく回復し、また１台当たりの容量も予測を上回るペースで増加するなど、旺盛なデータセンター需要による好循環が見られた。ただし昨年後半にかけては、こうした需要増に対してドライブメーカー自身の生産キャパシティや部材調達の問題などから、台数拡大のスピードはやや鈍化した。本セミナーではこれらの背景を解説するとともに、今後のHDDおよびSSD市場を中長期的視点で見通すことを目的とする。
